DLS

The DLS Company (DLS Svenska AB) started in 1979 when three guys (Dawid, Leif and Stefan) had an idea about making a communication receiver without the use of crystals. The receiver should be able to scan all frequencies for the Swedish police, fire brigade taxi etc.
This receiver production became a great success and continued until 1998 when DLS stopped the production because of low sales for these kinds of products. 100.000 receivers were produced during this period.

In 1985 the DLS guys got new ideas about going into the growing business of Car Audio and in 1986 the first range of loudspeakers and amplifiers were ready to meet the Swedish market. It was a tough job to introduce a new brand in competition with all the big brands like Pioneer, Clarion etc; but very soon the products got a reputation of having a very high quality. “If you want a good sound in your car – buy DLS”.
In the early 90:s,  DLS decided to introduce the Car Audio products on the international market as well.

The international sales are now steadily growing with new markets added every year. We are now represented in more than 50 countries.

The DLS Car Audio product line consists of high quality loudspeakers, amplifiers and some accessories for installation.

All R&D are made in our head office in Gothenburg – Sweden by Dawid Koniarski and Mats Andersen. Most of our products are produced by a number of sub-suppliers.

DLS also take active part in exhibitions. Since many years DLS have participated in the CES in Las Vegas showing nice competition cars in the booth.

The DLS mobile speaker system Iridium 6.2 was awarded as "EUROPEAN MOBILE LOUDSPEAKER OF THE YEAR 2004-2005.
The jury’s motivation: This 6,5" component system is one of the best ever from the Swedish competition-oriented brand. The DLS Iridium 6.2 passes comfortably that border which divides the technically perfect but average sounding equipment from the true audiophile products. The parts used in this system are an excellent combination of proven techniques and up-to-date innovative solutions. The cone of the woofer is made of non-pressed paper, which has been among the best for decades, and this complemented by the hybrid ferrite/neodymium magnet and aluminium voice coil. The switch able crossover contains foil coils that are exceptional in the field of car audio. DLS has successfully turned it’s technical knowledge into musical notes of the highest quality.

The EISA Awards are chosen annually by panels representing nearly 50 prominent Photo, Video, Audio, Home Theatre and Mobile Electronics magazines from over 18 European countries.

DLS market the Car Audio products by being very active in car sound competitions, both in Sweden, Europe and many other countries around the world. Two DLS competition cars joined the first car sound competition ever held in Moscow in 1998. Driving these two cars through Russia to Moscow was a big adventure with a lot of custom problems and police controls on the way. But the competition was a big event in Russia and the winning Swedish cars was shown on Russian Television so on their way back to Sweden they were famous and had no problem at all with the police or customs, they were recognised by everyone.

European car sound finals 2004 in Budapest, Hungary
This years European car sound EMMA finals were held in Budapest. The results for Team DLS were excellent, eleven first places, three second places and two third places. Besides this prizes for Best Sound and Best of show.

At the 2005 European finals in Athens, DLS took 6 First places, 4 Seconds and a bunch of Thirds.

At the 2006 European finals in Bern, Switzerland, DLS took 5 first, 5 second, and three third places, plus the awards for “Best installation” and “Best of Dolby Multimedia”

IASCA finals in USA
In 2002 we participated in the USA IASCA finals for the first time and DLS competitors took the finals by storm with five top-3 finishes, including one world championship.
2003 was once again a great success for DLS competitors. The result was very good. Two first places and two third places
Also in 2004 the DLS competitors made great success. Two first places, one second and two third places.

At the 2005 International Sound Quality Competition in the USA, DLS did it again. We knocked out our competitors taking 3 of the top five places.

At the IASCA/USAC USA Finals, DLS cars took 4 First places, 2 Seconds and 2 Thirds.

At the IASCA world finals 2006 DLS took 4 first places, among them in the most prestigious class, the Ultimate PRO with a vehicle from Thailand. This car also won the ISQC (International Sound Quality Competition).

In 2003 we decided to enter the home audio market with a range of speakers. To be able to realize this we started cooperation with a well-known Swedish speaker designer, Mats Andersen. We started with a series of “normal” HiFi speakers in wooden cabinet known as R-series. The R-series has got many good reviews in HiFi magazines. In a Norwegian test of 6 well known HiFi speakers the R55 was nominated for “Best sound”.
One year ago we presented the T-series in aluminium tower cabinets. This series is a “design series” made to fit in a modern home. The T3 tower is using a technique similar to the APP technique invented by Mats Andersen during his QLN period.

During the autumn 2005 the series is extended with a new innovation called T3-LCR. This is a revolutionary new speaker. It is made to fit directly under your wall mounted 42" plasma screen. It is compact and replaces the front left & right speakers and the centre. It is also possible to mount as rear speaker and combined with a separate subwoofer like the T-sub8 you will get a complete 6.1 system with only three discrete units. Wall mount bracket is included. It contains four pcs. of 3" mid/bass drivers and three 28 mm soft dome tweeters.

Now we also have a further development of the LCR, the LCR-wide. Equipped with two side mounted 3" wideband speakers it gives a far better width in the sound experience. It is designed to fit direct under your wall mounted plasma screen. A compact wall mounted speaker that replaces both right, left and centre channel in your surround system. A solid and "easy to mount" wall bracket comes with the speaker. The side mounted wideband speakers uses the new DLS EFR* technology for Extended Frequency Response. This technique is also used in the T3-LR speaker which is a Right-Left speaker made for use as rear speaker in a surround system. Both channels are in a single cabinet. This technique is now also used on some of the DLS Car Audio speakers as well.

Mats Andersen has worked in the speaker business from 1979 and is well known in the Scandinavian countries as a very innovative speaker designer. Mats have a degree in acoustics at the Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg. From 1986 and 15 years ahead, he was chief designer at the QLN speaker company in Sweden. Mats are the innovator of many new pioneering innovations used by QLN. One of these is the APP (Acoustic performance plug) that was used in one of the first small tower speakers on the market. A similar technique is also used in the DLS T3 speakers. This technique is the reason that a small 3” driver can perform a good bass in a small cabinet. Mats experiences have also helped us to further develop and make our Car audio speakers even better. The EISA award for Iridium 6.2 Car speaker system is a result of this work.

All speaker drivers are developed by DLS and produced by subcontractors. In the R-series we use a special kind of paper cone mixed with wool to get the acoustic qualities that we want.
